What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, which stands for “the science of life,” is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in India. The goal of Ayurveda is to prevent and treat illness by maintaining balance of the mind, body and spirit through proper diet, lifestyle, as well as herbal remedies.
According to Ayurveda, the five elements of nature (space, air, fire, water, earth) combine in the body into what is known as the doshas. These doshas connect closely with the basic elements of nature as well as specific physiological processes in the body. It is thought that a balance of these doshas is required for optimal health.
Dr. Pourang practices Maharishi Ayurveda, which is a modern restoration of Ayurveda. During an Ayurvedic consultation, Dr. Pourang will identify a your ideal state of balance and determine where you may be out of balance. Interventions such as specialized diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage treatments, music, and meditation are then recommended to help reestablish balance. Each regimen is highly customized according to each patient’s needs.
Benefits of Ayurveda
Many people report having more energy, better digestion and improvement of many health issues as a result of Ayurvedic practices.
There are many studies which have shown that meditation is effective in relieving stress and reducing the risk for heart disease. Several Ayurvedic herbal remedies have been studied for a variety of medical conditions. For example ashwagandha has been shown to have anti-depressant, anti-anxiety and anti-diabetic effects.
Ayurvedic Wellness Consultations
Dr. Pourang will conduct a comprehensive medical assessment that includes a thorough discussion of your lifestyle, mind-body health history and physical exam. Appropriate lab and diagnostic tests may also be recommended. In addition to this, you will undergo additional diagnosis via a Maharishi Ayurveda approach to health.
A Maharishi Ayurveda health consultation evaluates your physiology in terms of both your constitutional type and dosha imbalances, through pulse assessment and a clinical interview, part of which will be done by specific health questionnaires to be completed prior to your consultation.
Once the assessment is completed, you will be given a set of recommendations that help re-establish balance, to follow at home. These will be individualized according to your specific needs, and will generally include:
- Diet specific to your body type and imbalances
- Lifestyle and behavioral recommendations
- Herbal preparations to help promote balance
- Other recommendations, as appropriate: these may include:
Physiological cleansing procedures
Exercise tailored to your body type and imbalances
Recommendations to create a healthy influence from your environment
Generally the recommendations are to be followed for 1 to 3 months, after which it is advised that you return for a follow-up visit to re-evaluate your health status.
1 hour Basic Ayurveda and 2 hour Comprehensive Ayurveda consultations available.
*Recommendations you receive at your Maharishi Ayurveda consultation are complementary to, and not a replacement for, any prescribed medications or medical regimen. Herbs and other recommended products are offered separately.
